Please note: This is not intended to be an exhaustive list of situations that may arise during a game! These are some of the softball rules that confusion arises from during the games. Please let Spud know if you would like to see other rules/items covered here.
- Infield Fly Rule - The only times this may be called is when there are less than 2 outs and runners on at least first and second (this includes bases loaded). If the batter pops up, in fair territory, to the infield, and in the judgement of the umpire, the ball should be reasonably caught, the batter is called out and the runners can advance at their own risk (using the normal rules, e.g. must tag up on a ball that is caught, etc.).
- Ball out of Play (Overthrows) - If a ball is thrown and goes out of play, then all runners shall be given two bases (base they are going to plus one) AT THE TIME OF THE THROW! Exception: when a player is on a base when the ball is batted and they remain there, or are heading back to the base they occupied during the throw, then they only get 1 base.
- Tagging up on a Bobbled Catch - A player may tag up and leave as soon as a player in the field touches the ball. As an example, runner on third with one out and the batter hits a fly ball to left field. The fielder attempts to catch the ball and it "pops out of their mitt". While it is still in the air he catches it with his bare hand. The runner on third can advance as soon as the fielder touches the ball (i.e. with their mitt in this example).
